2015 Holiday Home Tour Header

Woo! One week until Christmas!! (I am so, so excited.) Alright, remember when I announced last week that today I would take you on a little holiday home tour? Well, consider this not so much a tour and more like a little glimpse ๐Ÿ˜‰ย The truth is that Christian and I are still getting to know our new home: we’re still not completely sure about what should go where, still haven’t hung anything on the walls, and have both moved our office spaces a few times now as we figure out what works the best for our working habits. (For any newer readers here, both Christian and I work out of our home.) We have realized this past month that we are both the kind of people where once we have a vision in our heads – when it comes to design and house stuff – it’s hard for us to see it any other way. Fortunately we’re both only this way with our own spaces so when Christian had his minor freakout over his space earlier in the month, I was the calm and logical one… and when I had my major freakout over my space earlier this week, Christian was my straight up KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR.

When we first bought this home, both Christian and I took one look at the formal dining room and just knew it would be the perfect space for my office. We haven’t gotten to that point yet where we have formal dinners – weย eat allย of our mealsย at our table in our kitchen – and I loved the idea of having more of an open space to write in versus a bedroom with a door. Fast forward a month later when I was forced to admit, both to Christian and to myself, that putting my office in our formal dining room was the worst idea ever. When I’m writing – whether it’s blogging or writing my novel – I need to be free from distraction, and sitting totally out in the open, right next to the kitchen where Christian would frequently visit throughout the day because, you know, PEOPLE GOTTA EAT – it was just really hard for me to get into my creative groove. It was also hard with that room being right off the front door… so any time anyone would come over, it just felt weird that I was so HI, WELCOME, I’M RIGHT HERE.

So on Wednesday, Christian asked if I might like to move my office upstairs into the guest room. Immediately I thought, “that’s a terrible idea!” Why though, Em? “Because that’s not originally what I’d planned!” ๐Ÿ˜‰ Fast forward through a lot of internal struggle on my part to finally just admit that this needed to happen. Christian suggested I pick out a paint color that “felt like me” and that he’d paint the room for me the next day (husband of the year award, I mean seriously). And so, I snapped out of my funk and thought – LET’S DO THIS. And you know what? We had the absolute BEST time all day Thursday, painting my new office my all time favorite color. And you know what else? The room is absolutely PERFECT. It’s quiet, there’s this amazing door that can be shut, it gets a ton of light, there’s no refrigerator 3 feet away from me, and yes – even without all of my things moved in thereย yet,ย it already “feels like me.”

As I was helping Christian paint the room, I was reminded of a part in one of my favorite movies, Under the Tuscan Sun, where the main character moves into this villa she’s just spontaneously bought and she says,

“Pick one room and make it yours. Go slowly through the house. Be polite, introduce yourself so it can introduce itself to you.”

Sometimes it just takes a few days… weeks… months… but slowly &ย surely we are figuring it out and our love for this house has only grown since we’ve moved in it. One of these days I will be SO excited to share a full home tour in this space but for now, I’m learning how much fun it can be to change plans ๐Ÿ™‚ And because we actually have decorated for Christmas and this is supposed to be a holiday home tour after all, here are a few other snapshots of the Christmasy-ness that fills our still-coming-together home…

Christmas front door

Christmas bows outside

We did not do lights outside this year, mostly because we just haven’t had the time to go buy them and then to actually put them up so instead I put red bows on the front porch ๐Ÿ™‚

First of all, please note the adorable Oooj face in the window. Also, Christian got this snowman skier guy last year for Christmas and we’d totally forgotten that when he got him, I jokingly told him he should name him. Well, he did and it was hilarious and I’d written his name on the back so that we wouldn’t forget. We cried laughing when we took him back out this year to put on our front porch…. “Slatey.” (I have no idea, this is the mind of my husband we’re talking about.)

Holiday Bannister

This was my one Christmas craft this year: string along the banister with mini clothespins where I’ve been hangingย all of the Christmas cards; this is what you see when you first walk in the front door and look up.

This is looking out from the kitchen, into the kitchen nook and into part of the family room. I love how much sunlight we get throughout the day!

So there you have it, a little glimpse – more to be shared at a later date as we continue to make this house our home. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!! We’re heading out of town on Monday but the Grateful Heart Monday linkup will still take place so I hope to “see” you all there!

  • The color of your new “plan B” office is stunning. I love the Oooj face and the Lil snowman guy. Cannot wait until you are settled. I had finally gotten all unpacked (after 6 years-ugh) and then I decided I should paint again, which has sadly taken me almost 2 years.

  • Love that color! I had a similar one in my office at one point. I’m jealous you have an office to yourself. My husband and I share a tiny little one together but it works. On a positive note we get to be together right? Love your home and can’t wait to hear all about your first Christmas there!

  • I can’t wait for that full-on home tour, but this did NOT disappoint ๐Ÿ™‚ Your house is just so lovely! I’m glad you found a better office space. When K and I moved in to our house we put his office in the spare bedroom and a media room in the basement, but after a few weeks we noticed that we NEVER went in the basement and K’s office was too small… SO we moved his whole office to the basement and it was perfect! (Now he has warehouse/office out of the house.)

    • ha! I know what you mean- we have moved furniture 20382 times, sometimes to the same rooms again, trying to feel it all out. I will be SO excited to finally be able to share a full-on home tour!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • I love the paint color in your office. It takes time to get a house the way you want it – and it’s always evolving. Thanks for sharing.

    • Always evolving for sure! (That’s truly the fun part though, of course.)

  • I love posts like these…call me nosy but I love seeing where people live!

I love the paint color in your dining room!!

    • Oh girl, I’m the same way ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m a sucker for home tours and before/after posts!

  • Your home looks beautiful! Love the kitchen/living room area!

  • I can’t wait to have a house of my own! My fiance and I are renting right now and will be building within the next year. SO FUN! Glad you are enjoying your first Christmas there ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I hear you! This is our first owned home and I’ve often times forgotten that we can paint, drill into walls, change out mirrors, etc! You will have so much fun next year!

  • your house looks really lovely from these snippets (and i’m sure the rest is or will be just as lovely, too!)! xx

  • I meant to comment on this when I read it but I still struggle to use Disqus from my phone! I love what you’ve shared, your house looks so inviting and lovely! I am so with you on the office space…I was convinced when we moved in that the guest room was the best place. But then months went by where I didn’t use it, so M suggested we put it in the unused dining room since I was always downstairs. But that wasn’t any better because all of my things were constantly being taken and hidden by Bug! We *just* moved me up into the master bedroom. It’s huge, it doesn’t get used except for sleep, and it’s the perfect space. I just need to paint it now ๐Ÿ˜‰ PS I love that purply color!! XO

    • I still struggle with Disqus from my phone too, which is why I’m only JUST NOW responding to all of the comments here, eek! I hear you on the moving… I think in a few years I’ll probably move to our master as well and use this room for another bedroom. We are movers & shakers, aren’t we?! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Can’t wait to see you!!

  • I love your home! Its beautiful. And I love the color you painted the office. I can’t wait to come see this space IRL. ๐Ÿ˜‰ xoxo
