Choosing Gratefulness.

Happy Monday, all 🙂 Are we awake this morning? Anyone else in need of a few pots of coffee?

It was a bit quiet around these parts last week and as the week and weekend continued, it only felt appropriate for things to stay that way. I think sometimes life just requires us to be quiet for a bit, to reflect, to mourn, to pray for others, to celebrate a special person in your heart, and to spend precious time with loved ones – and so that’s what I did, all of it. And while my heart still feels heavy for Joey and for Paris and for Beirut, and for the brokenness of this world that seems so loud right now, I’m thankful to have things to be grateful for. I’m thankful to be able to choose gratefulness. And I’m so thankful to be able to share these things with all of you who choose it this week too. Because in the midst of sadness and tragedy, and loss and change, choosing to be grateful is one of the biggest things that always seems to pull me through.

Here are some of the things my heart is grateful for…

  • MOVING DAY. TODAY. LIKE, RIGHT NOW. PRAISE. Stand by for an update on these things later this week – I am so grateful for our new home!
  • Freedom. Our country may not be perfect (is there even such a place though?) but it’s a place I do feel safe to be in and I’m grateful for the freedom I’m given daily because men and women have and will continue to fight for it.
  • This space. I’m slowly getting the hang of WordPress, much thanks to my sweet friend Anne who spent hours helping me through it all. I am so lucky to have met such kind and helpful and willing people in this place we call Blogland!
  • Painting COMPLETE. I mean thank you baby Jesus because I think I’d about reached my breaking point. I told Christian that he’s not allowed to bring up paint, the color gray, the color white, Home Depot, or anything else that remotely has to do with painting for a good 3 months. WE’RE DONE HERE.
  • Good friends. After a week of having such a heavy heart, spending Saturday with old and new friends for a little Friends Thanksgiving was just what my soul needed.
  • My health, my life, my husband. I pray I never ever take even one day for granted. Thank you, Jesus <3
  • Our baby. Because he/she is coming, I know this! In the meantime, we wait as patiently as we possibly can and give thanks daily for the little person God has already chosen to make us a family.
  • Prayer. I am so grateful that during and through all of these painful things I can pray to the King of Kings who hears, who loves, and who rescues hearts.

I wish you all a Monday that holds enough courage to push through the hard things and hold tight to the good, even if it’s just one thing. Thanks so much for joining me here each week… it means so much to me.

I love your thankful heart and beautiful perspective, Emily! You’re an inspiration 🙂

  • It’s like the calm before the (much anticipated) storm! A new house brings noise and the holidays bring noise and OF COURSE a new baby brings noise! And how exciting all of that will be!! I’m glad you were able to enjoy a quiet, reflective weekend!

    • That’s exactly what it feels like! 🙂 It’s a great chapter, this one right now.

Such great things to be thankful and grateful for!

  • Even with sadness and chaos and devastation, we do have small blessings that remind us of how good God can be. Perspective is everything. We can share in the heartbreak of others and even mourn our own losses while still feeling grateful for the little things that keep us going. My mom died four months ago, and I’m still grieving deeply for her. But I’m also grateful for the time I had with her. I also realize that my grief is so hard because we loved each other so much. How can I not be glad that I was blessed with such a wonderful woman as my mother?

    • I am so sorry for the loss of your mom, Brita. I am so close with my mom too and can’t imagine the grief you must be feeling. It says so much about your heart (and the love the two of you shared) for you to know that the grief stems from the great bond you two had and will always, always have. Thinking of you <3

Happy moving day! So exciting! And, you absolutely must be thankful for that sweet kitty! I wish I could lounge like that all day today! 🙂

    • That sweet kitty is hating life right now in the new house – she’s very confused! I’m praying she’s back to her lounging soon! 😉

  • Happy moving day, how exciting for you guys! I hope the move is not too difficult.

My heart still aches deeply for Paris and Beirut. How devastating.

    • The move was pretty painless (“only” one broken glass table, eek). But we’re IN. 🙂 xo

  • Yay for moving day!! Good luck with it & I hope it goes quick and easy. Oh and your cat is just too cute!!

  • Never a dull moment in your life! Congrats on the move, I hope it all goes well.

    • Seriously- life has been amazingly crazy lately, whoa! Thank you, V! 🙂

  • It’s amazing how taking some time to be still and choose gratefulness can make such a difference. This linkup (and your entire blog!) is always a good reminder of that. It’s a skill that I’m constantly trying to work on. Your list is wonderful. I’m excited for you about the move! I hope everything goes smoothly!

    • Thank you so much for your sweet words, Emily. Your comments always make me smile 🙂

  • It is so hard to feel grateful when the world seems so so sad. But it does seem to help lift my spirits too, when I decide to find things to be thankful for anyway. Thank God for painting over – and hooray for moving day!! I hope it all goes smoothly and you guys are unpacked super quickly! Have a wonderful week, friend XO

    • I always thought I was so great at multi-tasking and this move has proved that no, no I am not. (I currently have 8 unread texts… yours being one of them! I am sorry, friend!!) XO!

  • Can’t wait to hear about moving day! So happy y’all made it to Friendsgiving!

What a positive post in a dark time. There is so much to be thankful for these days. Good luck with the move and all the transitions, such a happy and exciting time! This week I’m thankful for a supportive husband as I transition to going back to work after the baby…it’s been rough!

Love this post! So much to be thankful for. And the way you feel about painting is exactly how much husband feels every time I bring it up. He had to sub out at his company for a few months in the painting department and despised it. It was years ago, but he is STILL over it! ha.

    • I feel like that will totally be me- never over hating painting haha! Christian mentioned earlier today how it might be a good idea to paint our pantry (it’s still the old color) and I was like, “DON’T YOU EVER MENTION THAT ‘P’ WORD IN THIS HOUSE AGAIN!”
