I’ll never forget the first time I found out my Kindergarten teacher wasn’t JUST a Kindergarten teacher and was also a mom, wife, and you know- a real person with a life outside of my elementary school classroom who talked about more than just letters and the months of the year. A completely CRAZY notion, I know. That same truth goes for us bloggers though too – as much as we might wish we were blogging and taking pictures of brick walls and food every single day (?!), we still live our “real lives” too – it’s just a bit more under the radar 😉 Today, the ever fabulous Ashten from Just Go Left blog is letting us in on her “real life” – you know, the one outside of blogland…
*The following post is a guest post, written by Ashten from Just Go Left, specifically for Ember Grey readers.
Happy Thursday! My name is Ashten and I’m the lifestyle blogger behind Just Go Left, a lifestyle blog about embracing life’s messes and choosing to thrive. I believe through the ups and downs of life we are given the choice to “go left” when things don’t go right. I started Just Go Left in August of this year and it’s quickly become my passion project; a love letter to living my best life.
And yes, I kind of wish I was Oprah.
I live with my boyfriend Kyle and our dog Gatsby in Atlanta, Georgia. You should know that I never start my day without a cup of coffee and I’m an introverted extrovert with a penchant for sarcasm, sass and stubbornness. Under my sarcastic exterior, you’ll find I have a big heart and a lot more feelings than I will ever admit.
2015 has been a year of changes for me, one of the biggest being that I’ve placed a lot of value in self-care. Because of this, weekends are especially precious, and I focus on doing things that make me feel happy, fulfilled and balanced. Today I thought it might be fun to take you through what a typical Sunday looks like in my house!
Here’s what a typical Saturday looks like in my house, in case you’re interested! (Click here)
On weekends, I have one rule: never set an alarm. I let my body rest and recharge, waking up when it wants to. On this particular Sunday I was wide-awake at seven-freaking-thirty and would you believe this is actually sleeping in for me? During the week I wake up at 5:00 a.m. to work out….and before you think I’m completely nuts, you must know it took me about three months to get used to that schedule. On weekends, I usually lay in bed for a while after waking up; checking social media and emails until Gatsby’s little face pops up next to the bed, telling me it’s time to get up.
8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
I’m always the first one up in our household. Kyle is a night-owl, and normally doesn’t come to bed before midnight. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a morning person and I cherish the quiet morning moments when I have the house to myself. One thing that has made my mornings better is setting our coffee pot before bed, so coffee is ready right when I wake up. I cannot recommend this enough; seriously makes my day so much better smelling freshly brewed coffee as I come downstairs. Right now, I’m loving the Winter Blend coffee with some Ginger Bread Latte mix (both from Trader Joes) as creamer. After taking Gatsby out, I set up my little work station at our dining room table, light a candle and make my to-do list for the day as well as our weekly grocery list.
9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
After about an hour, Gatsby reminds me that it’s Sunday, and Sunday means we go to the dog park together before Kyle wakes up. The park is actually in our neighborhood, only a few blocks from our house, and it was a huge selling point when we moved in. Gatsby has never met a dog he doesn’t like, and while he socializes, I get to finish my coffee. On this particular day, he made friends with a Collie named Colin and they ran so hard that after about 20 minutes, he was ready to go home. (On a normal weekend he will run for 30-45 minutes before calling it a day!) When we come home, Kyle is usually awake; we make breakfast together, feed Gatsby catch up on our DVR and then head out to run a few errands.
11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
My favorite thing to do on Sundays is shop at our local Trader Joes. You guys, I love Trader Joes so much its stupid. Another goal of 2015 was to be very conscious of our budget and be intentional about saving, and we have a very set grocery budget because of it. At Trader Joes, we can always get enough food for the both of us for the week and stay under budget. My love of TJs is so bad that I now share my “find of the week” on Instagram…but really I love to show people how easy it is to stay in budget but still have fun with your food! On this Sunday we hit up Trader Joes, Petsmart and then decided we wanted Moscow Mules for an afternoon treat, so we went to the liquor store as well.
1:30 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
After our errands were run we come home, grabbed Gatsby and go on a long walk. On this particular day, we walked about 4 miles along the Chattahoochee River. This is one of our favorite things to do on the weekends and we make it a priority every weekend. Quality time is especially important to Kyle and me because we were in a long distance relationship for 9 months before moving in together and during the week we work opposite schedules so weekends are our time to hang out and catch up.
4:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m
After walks, showers and feeding Gatsby dinner Kyle and I prep our meals for the week, I write and work any blog posts I didn’t finish on Saturday (or try to! I was really bad about it this week). We have dinner together, I pack my gym bag for a 5 a.m. alarm and we end our day with Netflix before I go to bed at 9:30 p.m., rested, refreshed and ready for another week!
I hope you enjoyed a little peek into my Sunday! What do your Sundays look like?
