Friday Favorites: Christmas Traditions

December 2, 2016

tp-header

Happy Friday!! Today I’m talking about some of my favorite traditions, specifically Christmas traditions. While I have quite a few, today I’m sharing my top five…

ORNAMENTS

Isn’t it funny how a tiny little piece of glass or metal on a piece of string can mean so much? Christian and I have collected unique ornaments since we started dating – gifting each other with a new one each year – and dedicating one whole night to putting them on the tree. But it’s more than just hanging them in the perfect place; it’s about reminiscing over each one – because each one means something so special. When we got married, and realized that if we kept up the tradition of getting the other person an ornament every single year we’d end up with a million ornaments within 10 years haha, we decided we’d do a family ornament… but only when our son or daughter made us a family. About a week after Crew was born, it hit me that this would be the year we could get our family ornament! I had no idea at the time what this ornament would be or look like, but much thanks to Tiny Prints – it’s absolutely perfect:

Our precious Crew Xavier sweetly blessed our 2016 so it only made sense that he should be our 2016 ornament. We used one of our all time favorite pictures of Crew when he was about a day old.

I love this picture; I love that he’s holding my hand and if you look closely you’ll see a sapphire and diamond ring on my finger… Christian had gifted that ring to me last year for Christmas, most definitely a surprise (I hadn’t asked for any jewelry!) but he said I needed it and that it was a reminder that our baby was on their way to us. We didn’t know at the time that our baby would be a boy… though it was something I’d felt deep down for years, that our first child would be our son. That ring brought me hope for many months, until our baby boy was in our arms.

CHRISTMAS MOVIES

Alright now this is one of my absolute favorite Christmas traditions. (Truthfully, I’ll probably say that about all of these, ok?) I grew up watching the claymation Christmas movies (Rudolph, Frosty, etc) and even though I’m a grown adult now you know I still watch them! I’ve added some others to my list over the years though and mentioned them in this post last year . Do we share any Christmas faves?

CHRISTMAS CARDS

Well considering this usually takes me a few hours each year, I’d better reserve an entire evening now that Crew is here! I love this tradition though: addressing all of our Christmas cards and writing personalized notes on the back, while drinking a Christmas-y drink and watching any one of the above Christmas movies. Since I haven’t mailed out our 2016 Christmas cards yet, I won’t share the picture or design I chose here but I will tell you – it was Tiny Prints to the rescue once again to help me create the perfect card! If you haven’t made your cards yet, be sure to check out their Christmas & Holiday designs – there’s something for everyone and they really make it a painless process, easy peasy! Below are a few of my favorite designs from the Tiny Prints collections and all can be found at the Tiny Prints holiday card webpage!

CHRISTMAS EVE

Um, where do I even begin? I have my parents to thank for instilling in me a million traditions for Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and I love every single one. The Christmas Eve traditions have to be my favorite though. Christian and I head to Indiana where we meet up with my brother, SIL, and parents and we all head to the Candlelight Service at my parents’ church. (I cry every year. I’m most likely going to be a sobbing mess this year, what with Crew in my arms! Gah!) Then, we go to dinner (the same restaurant every year!) where we go around the table and discuss important things like what our favorite memories were of that year and what our favorite Christmas song is and the best Christmas gift we’ve ever gotten and what we’re most looking forward to in the new year. Two years ago during this part of the tradition it was all I could do to not cry when I thought about the coming year. I couldn’t bear to imagine us still waiting for our baby. The year came and went and, as you all know, we did not become parents that year. But last year, I sat at that restaurant and sat up straight with a determined look on my face, looked my parents in the eyes and I told them: “2016 is the year. I feel it. It has to be it. It’s going to happen. Our baby is coming.” And he did πŸ™‚

After dinner, we go back to my parents house to change into Christmas pjs, grab a beverage of our choice, and then jump in the car – all 6 of us – so we can drive around and look at Christmas lights. It’s always super cozy and we drive to the same neighborhoods each year but it’s always so much fun!

DECORATING

Of course decorating is a big tradition and there are many traditions just within the decorating itself. (I mean, right??) You’ll have to check back next week though – I’ll be sharing this year’s Holiday Home Tour on Wednesday, Dec. 7th! πŸ™‚

What are some of your favorite Christmas traditions?

I love your Christmas Eve traditions!! The 24th is my absolute favorite day. I love the evening candlelight church service and I love looking pretty and I love hanging out at my grandma’s house in the evening as well as brace for the Christmas miracle! I LOVE Christmas Eve!

  • That ornament is precious! I love that its engraved, what a sweet reminder every year that you decorate the tree. I love personalized ornaments that mean something, it is such a great tradition.

  • Me and my husband have started collecting Christmas ornaments as well. It is a great one to remember memories from the year in which they were given.

    • It’s crazy how they really start to pile up! (Just one more reason to have multiple trees!) πŸ™‚

  • Love these traditions! Christmas cards are one of ours (or maybe mine since my husband doesn’t feel very strongly about them haha). The claymation movies are my jam too. Amelia is old enough to sit through them this year and my heart has burst watching her watch them for the first time!

    • ahhh! So fun! I can’t wait for Crew to really watch them with us πŸ™‚

  • I seriously love all the wonderful traditions of Christmas. A couple we’ve got – spending Christmas morning together for a quiet, short blissful moment, opening our gifts and drinking coffee, just being. And then we hop in our cars and deliver Christmas goodies homemade by friends and family to folks that have to work on Christmas day.

  • Ah yes! I just love the entire concept of traditions around Christmas time. P.S. The Holiday and Serendipity are two of my absolutely favorites too!!

  • Such cute traditions! Other than having a baby around (no babies over here for a while! πŸ™‚ ) our Christmases sound similar!
