grateful heart monday

A Grateful Heart (+ weeklong linkup!)

December 8, 2014
Happy Monday!! First, I want to say HELLO to all of you new linker-uppers (?!). Each week I get so excited to meet “new to me” bloggers via Grateful Heart posts. I’m so glad you’re here! And hello to all of you faithful Grateful Heart Monday-ers 🙂 I’m so glad you’re here too, of course!

Today I did something I’ve never done before. I googled the word GRATEFUL. And I was surprised to read something I’d never thought of before.

feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness; thankful

Of course I’ve always known that to be grateful is to express gratitude; to be thankful, but feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness? So then I googled GRATITUDE and it said, to show appreciation for and to return kindness. There was that word again and I don’t know why I’d never associated the word kindness with being grateful, because it does make sense. I suppose when I hear the word “grateful” I simply think of giving thanks and remaining in that place of thankfulness in my heart  – but then it stops there.

I think I’ve been cutting this whole “grateful heart” thing short. In fact, I’ve most likely been pretty selfish with it. I’ve said it before and I will always say it- one of the things I love about an intentional grateful heart is that no matter what you’re grateful for- big or small (and I’m talking like if you’re grateful for Chipotle, because DUH), it still matters. Living with a grateful heart seriously changes your outlook on your day to day and over time – I mean it when I say your life will change in the most positive and beautiful way. But perhaps I need to stretch my thinking a bit and also focus on the kindness of others and how real that is… how beautiful that is… and how important that is to be grateful for.

You know the Abe Lincoln quote “if you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will”? I think this goes both ways. I think the more we look for kindness in others and the more we make ourselves more aware of it, the more we truly will see it and maybe this world won’t seem quite as dark. Because for all of the bad that’s going on right now, there is also a lot of good going on too. Plus, it feels SO good to get out of your own skin for awhile and focus on others, you know what I mean? Maybe by acknowledging the kindness in others, we will be encouraged to return the kindness too.

SO. I’m going to challenge myself each Monday: for every thing or moment in my own life that I give thanks for, I am also going to give thanks for someone else’s kindness. Again, big or small- that’s not what matters. The point of this is to truly begin each day with a grateful heart. (And isn’t it crazy how easy this is??) Share the love, guys. Spread the kindness. Grateful hearts were meant to be shared.

What are you grateful for?

  • Guess what word I googled yesterday?

Generosity : the quality of being kind, understanding, and not selfish

    There's that word. Kind.

Our pastor did a sermon on it yesterday challenging us to look at our motives before we give and make sure that what we are giving comes from our heart and not out of obligation or an intent to one-up someone.

  • It cool to see the link between having a grateful heart and kindness. I can say through finding something every day to be grateful for has helped me to see others in a more positive light, because each day I'm searching for something to be grateful for. I see kindness easier when I'm grateful and also am able to be kind when I'm grateful. It neat how it all works together. 🙂

  • Love your thoughts this beautiful Monday morning! I've seen the good around me a lot lately, not just with the joy the holidays bring, but seriously there is so much GOOD in the world. We just have to seek it out, really love this linkup, you are awesome 🙂

  • Hubs thinks I'm crazy sometimes for trying to see the good in people (like his sister). But I think it helps me stay positive and keeps me from being so judgmental.

  • This is great!! My hubby and I always talk about how there is so much good in the world but you hardly ever hear about it! There probably is more good than bad, but the news and social media doesn't want to talk about that! I am going to go out on a limb to start being more grateful for the kindness and goodness of others 😉 Happy Monday!

  • Because for all of the bad that's going on right now, there is also a lot of good going on too. —> YES!! I love everything about this. With all the craziness going on – we can choose to focus on that or look beyond that and find the postitive.

Emily! This is a great post! And now I am off to google "Grateful and Gratitude". Thank you for sharing this perspetive!! xoxo

  • You hit the nail right on the head when you said, "Maybe by acknowledging the kindness in others, we will be encouraged to return the kindness too"! When I focus on others and how their kindness makes me feel, I find my spirits lifting and spreading that kindness to others, too! Love this, Emily and I love your new button–so festive! 🙂

  • LOVE this. An excellent post to remind me that even though I'm steaming w/ the daycare admin people I need to see the kindness in them. At least they sent a letter, right? LOL. I always love your thought provoking posts my dear. <3

  • Kira Anastasia

Love this idea! It's what drove me to start blogging! 🙂

  • Liz

I love this! You can see two the two are related (kindness and being grateful), but maybe not as an outright connection. I have been trying very hard to take a step back and look at things with a different perspective, and it definitely helps. I love to show kindness in whatever ways that I can. Thanks for sharing this!!

  • Wow, an appreciation of kindness? Interesting! I've definitely been very selfish in my 'gratefulness' as well. Time to change that!! 🙂

  • Beautifully put, as usual!

I couldn't agree more. I wrote a post a while back about the 5 BEST Kinds of People. I was so tired of seeing blog posts about 'The 5 worst people on Facebook', or 'the 3 worst kinds of drivers'. So I decided to switch the focus to the types of wonderful people we encounter in our lives. Like the person who pays our toll, or that person who buys you a drink at Starbucks.

Clearly I'm on the same wavelength as you. Gratitude extends far beyond our belongings and internal selves.

  • You are such a wise, wise woman. I'm so grateful for you and our friendship 🙂

  • Exactly!! It's about putting and keeping your heart in the right place… which also helps keep us going through the hard times. It's a daily learning lesson 🙂

  • aw, thanks, Whitney! 🙂 I agree with you- there is a LOT of good. And I love that so many of us here (in the blogging community) see it and carry it through.

  • !!!! Thank you!!! Awesome!

  • haha 😉 It definitely helps keep me positive, esp when a hard situation arises.

  • Thanks for sharing this, Emily! I love looking at gracefulness that way.

  • Exactly- I talk about that all the time! How the media loves to get people all riled up. (The news and Facebook, haha)

  • 🙂 Already, since Monday, I've noticed more people showing kindness this week – so it's working!!

  • Aw, thanks lady! I'm looking forward to Monday!! 🙂

  • Totally!! I've already noticed more people going out of their way this week to help others… warms my heart to see. Have a great weekend – I'll "see" you Monday! 🙂

  • oh, lady. A letter??? They didn't call you?!?!! *breathing* It may take more effort to keep kindness in the forefront with this one but it can be done!! 🙂 xo

  • Thanks, Sarita! 🙂 Looking forward to seeing you on Monday for another round of sharing gratefulness! I always enjoy your posts of your sweet girls.

  • Love it!!! 🙂 It feels so good to be grateful, and even better to share it with others. Thanks for stopping by, Kira!

  • Yes, I have as well – not always easy but the more I do it, the easier it becomes and is more of a habit – which is good! Thanks for linking up, Liz! 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  • I'm attempting to do both now – already, since posting this, I've noticed others showing their kindness…. going out of their way to help someone else. And I wonder if it's always been that way and I'm just now noticing?! Either way, it's so nice to witness and reminds me to do the same 🙂

  • I love that!! Can't wait to read that post of yours. That's so true.

  • Shoot- that link to your post didn't work??

  • 🙂 You make me smile, Kelly!!

  • Got it!!
