grateful heart monday

A Grateful Heart (for snowy weekends).

March 2, 2015

Happy Monday (and happy March, whoa!)! I’m writing this from the snowy scenes of Indiana this morning – my gosh, is the midwest seeing it’s (un)fair share of winter storms. Christian and I had planned on making the trip back to Nashville yesterday but 9+ inches of snow in 24 hours obviously changed those plans πŸ˜‰ We are now hanging out here until Tuesday!

Being stuck inside the house I grew up in, along with my family and the million animals we all have is pretty cozy, I must say. My car is literally snowed in and until now I haven’t even thought of having to dig it out. This past weekend, I barely got online. In fact, I did something I haven’t done in months: I read. A BOOK. Well, not the entire thing, but a good chunk of it, and it was SO perfect – just the kind of rest my brain needed. Winter days, while I am ready for them to say goodbye and hello to spring, force rest. Like a kid who swears he’s not tired but is seriously in need of a nap, this time of year is that forced nap πŸ˜‰ These weekends bring quiet afternoons – something I normally wouldn’t choose (even if I should). It’s almost like this time of year shows you all of the distractions you’ve picked up the last 8 months and then shows you how nice it is to get rid of them, if even just for a few hours. I think maybe that’s why when spring comes, we’re all so dead-set on ‘spring cleaning.’ I know I am! I clean my closet, the house, my car, my desk. I give away all of the things I truly don’t need and once again, I breathe easier. While we may take part in ‘the great purge’ in the springtime, I think our hearts prepare for it in the winter.
Today, while I continue to rest in the beauty of the falling snow, I am grateful. I am grateful for wintery weekends spent with a good book and a hot cup of tea. I am grateful for time with family, quiet time spent snuggling with my favorite Oooj as we watch the snow accumulate on the back deck. I am grateful for bffs who know me so well and want to share with me a book they enjoyed because they know I’ll enjoy it too. I am grateful for reminders that less is more and blue skies are surely on the way. And, I am grateful for all of you – who join me in beginning each week with a grateful heart. These are the days of our lives and I’m choosing to be grateful.

  • My hubby and I made the trek from Richmond, IN to eastern Ohio yesterday in the snow! It was quite an adventure! I'm glad you got some quality relaxation time!

  • I love your analogy of the child who says they are tired but truly are! Yes, I've felt the same way with some of our snow days. However, I've already started my spring cleaning and organizing! Hope your trip to Nashville is safe!

  • So true, this time of year does kind of force us to slow down and reflect, definitely a good thing!

  • So much to be grateful for- it sounds quite lovely to be snowed in, enjoying a few more days of forced rest. Safe travels to you on your way home friend!

  • I love Winter weekends…as long as the roads are clear for driving to/from work during the week. πŸ™‚

  • I have been LOVING all of this now! It's definitely true what you said about slowing down!

  • My mom was sitting at the table while I was on the couch reading and I kept telling her she could turn on the tv, that it wouldn't bother me. She never did (she read too) and by the end of the day I told her I didn't realize how much I needed the tv to be off for a change… definitely a new habit I will be bringing back with me to TN πŸ™‚

  • Oh I'm so happy you had this too, Liz! πŸ™‚ I feel so refreshed today- hope you do too πŸ™‚ XO!

  • I'm thinking so after this weekend! πŸ™‚

  • It really does. I wanted so badly to go outside and walk around in it but hadn't brought the right shoes. Next time πŸ˜‰

  • It was so needed, when I didn't know it was needed. So thankful for that too. Happy Monday, Kel!

  • yes!! ha! Well… I was reading The Tao of Willie. (By Willie Nelson) It's actually really good! πŸ™‚

  • My mom has said the same.. she's sick of the snow. I think had X and I stayed in Chicago or the midwest for this winter, I'd be feeling the same, but since TN rarely gets snow- I was enjoying it this weekend πŸ™‚ Happy Monday, Meg!

  • Oh wow! Glad you guys are safe! (I have quite a bit of family in Richmond, IN) πŸ™‚ Small world!

    SATURDAY!!! The 7th. Yikes!

  • I was talking to a friend yesterday about the snow and she said something great, we can't stop the weather…it's going to snow whether we like it or not…why not enjoy the pause in our lives. It was great I love that this is the slow time of year. We're not eager to spend every minute outside soaking it all in being too distracted. We can sit inside and not feel like we're missing out #FOMO. I'll take it while I can.

The cleaning off of the cars and shoveling is by far the only downfall.

  • Curling up with a good book is a whole lot of fun, especially when in includes coffee or tea. Even though you may be snowed in, you are in a great place to be stuck inside surrounded by family and pets. What book are you reading? Have a great day, Emily! πŸ™‚

  • Oh I love reading. I haven't had a change to do any recreational reading lately with school and all, but We have a short break coming up and I'm hoping to make good use of it to catch up.

Snow is so pretty. While it has it's downfalls, we can't really do much about it can we? I choose to enjoy it, and what better way than playing outside with a dog that can't get enough of it! Haha! Bear's made snow, so much more fun.

  • this brought back so many winter days in the midwest! the slow pace and simply life. so glad you were able to stay longer with family! xo

  • Snowy weekends are great for lazy pajama days and just hanging out with the family…. Love them!! And love snow when we have no plans πŸ™‚

  • Yes, exactly! I've been trying really hard to put my phone away and read in the evenings.

  • The snowy weather has been nice in some ways, but I am ready for spring! Hope you guys make it home safely!

  • Gosh, that's a lot of snow. And here I was complaining about the windy weather in San Francisco. I am grateful that spring is here and hope your spring comes soon!

  • It's been cold down here in Texas too! My parents house was covered in ice…not snow πŸ™ I'm glad you've had time to just chill and read! I'm jealous! I need some snow here to force us to stay at home! :-p

  • Being snowed in with family and furries and a book sounds AMAZING!

  • I relate to this! It's been a snowy past 2 weeks in Colorado. The weekend before last was so snowy that church was even cancelled, so it definitely forced us to slow down. We watched a lot of Everybody Loves Raymond reruns, gave each other massages, and I baked cookies. The weather lets you take a break without feeling too guilty about it. That being said, I'm ready for the snow to stop so that I can start getting out more often again!

  • Totally right! They were the best company to be snowed in with πŸ™‚ I am reading The Tao of Willie. (By Willie Nelson) It's certainly not one I would've picked up on my own, which is why I'm so glad my bff sent it to me – I'm really enjoying it πŸ™‚

  • My mom ended up making chili and all of us sat around by the fire and watched movies or read – it was exactly what I needed! πŸ™‚ xo!

  • Same. I loved it so much, I think it's going to become my new thing on the weekends πŸ™‚

  • I'm ready for spring too, Lindsay!! πŸ™‚ We made it home this afternoon, just in time to enjoy the 65* TN weather! Did you get warm temps today?!

  • Oh you are so awesome!

  • Hi!!!! πŸ™‚ Yes, it was the perfect wintery weekend!

  • Yep- she's totally right. As long as I don't have to drive in it, I can enjoy it πŸ™‚ I woke up this morning, about to head back to TN, to my mom cleaning off my car – what a saint she is!

  • In TEXAS?! Crazy! I hope you find (or make) some time this next weekend to do something just for you! πŸ™‚

  • Yes!! My parents church was cancelled this past weekend too. LOVE Everybody Loves Raymond reruns! πŸ™‚ (My fave episode is when Ray takes "modeling pictures" of Robert. I laugh every time!!

  • So excited for you! I'll tweet this for you tomorrow!

  • They are! My favorite kind of days! πŸ™‚

  • I can't wait for you to read for fun too! It's funny how this past weekend made reading a priority for me – I'm thankful for that.

My mom's GP was playing in the snow all weekend!! πŸ™‚ It's so much fun to watch them!

  • Thanks, Juju! It seems to be warming up in TN, fortunately!

  • Awwww so funny those GPs in the snow. You have got to send me some pics!!

  • That sounds SO nice πŸ™‚ I hope you find some quiet time for yourself, Kathy!

  • chall1018

Sounds like a perfect weekend to me! What book did you read?

  • Man, I should have!! Okay next time for sure! Here's a post from last year with their GP in the snow! His name is Hank πŸ™‚ http://www.embergrey.com/2014/02/0552.html

  • I've been reading The Tao of Willie by Willie Nelson. Never something I would've picked up on my own πŸ˜‰ So glad my bff gifted it to me though I'm really, really enjoying it.

  • I was just going to ask what book but saw in one of your previous comments….hmmm….I'm intrigued. I need downtime like nobody's business but I always just feel so incredibly guilty There is always so much I could be doing around here that is productive…..of course reading could produce a more productive soul so maybe I should go with that! I'm looking forward to an out of town trip because I know there is no housework and if I want to read I totally can…guilt free!

  • it is wonderful when a Friend recommends a book, I recently read In My Hands, it was recommended to me by a friend. I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise, it was a good read. πŸ™‚

  • Ashleigh

    Thank you for hosting this awesome link up!! I really enjoyed looking around your blog! Have an awesome week! xx Ashleigh @SimplyWright {www.wrightismply.com}

  • Thanks for stopping by, Ashleigh! πŸ™‚

  • I know it… some nights (most nights) I have to force myself to stop the chores and sit down and read. I always sleep better when I read before bed! This book by Willie is an easy, funny read.
