about me sometimes it's random and that's okay

It’s All About Me! (You gotta sing that.)

September 9, 2014
My dad and I have this silly jingle we sing to each other sometimes and it goes, “It’s all about me!” So if I start talking to my dad about myself, I’ll tell him what I have to say and then I’ll sing that. (And he does it too.) It’s hilarious. It’s also very fitting for today’s post.
Last week, I was tagged for the 7 Things About Me post of randomness. When I went to write this post though I had a hard time thinking of “random” things or things most of you may not know about me. Why? Because it’s me- and to me nothing stands out as weird or random… it’s allll normal πŸ˜‰  But the second I asked Christian if he could come up with any, he laughed and rattled off about 5 “Emily quirks” in about 7 seconds. Thanks, babe. Always there for me when I need ya.

  • I have a (most likely unhealthy) addiction to People Magazine and check People Online literally every day. Sometimes multiple times. It’s kind of like my time during the day to check out and take a break πŸ˜‰ That’s how I justify it.
  • I cannot stand the phrase “nom nom” or when people talk to adults in baby voices. I have been known to quietly walk out of the room if either of these things happen when I’m around. (And then I rock myself in a corner somewhere.)
  • I always have to turn the radio/music way down when I’m looking for a parking space, parallel park, or pull into a parking garage.
  • There are certain songs I have to play super loud – I cannot listen to them if they’re not blasting. They are, in no particular order (because obviously Michael Bolton is #1): Everything and anything Coldplay (I need the full concert experience, you know?), Gavin DeGraw’s Best I Ever Had, Michael Bolton’s Steel Bars and How Can We Be Lovers (because, duh), and Tupac’s Changes
  • Both of my parents are in the medical field and yet I’m the one who passes out when I get my blood drawn. I’m extremely squeamish and cannot handle seeing/hearing/talking about anything involving blood/fluids/injuries/ETC. NOPE.
  • I am deathly afraid of spiders. Christian has to take care of this at our house – I physically cannot do it. One time in college, there was a spider in the house and my roommate and I strategized a plan on how we’d kill it, only to stand in front of it for 25 minutes with Raid while wearing trash bags over our clothes, screaming, until our other roommate got home from class and “took care of the situation.” (The situation being the spider. We were beyond help, clearly.)
And there you have it. Everything you never needed to know πŸ˜‰ (Writing them out only made me realize how girly I am, wow.)
So what about the rest of you?! Do you have any “weird” (totally normal) or random quirks?

  • Hahaha, it's alll normal–I know exactly what you mean! You really have to analyze to figure out what facts about you would seem random to others to even share! Yeah, I'm not fond of the "nom nom" (it can stop now). And thankfully (maybe not quite the right word there), I've gotten to where I get blood taken sooo much anymore that I can handle it well enough–though I hate it and must NOT watch. I even went to the MedExpress place here a couple of weeks ago, where of course they had to take blood, all by myself. (Daniel ALWAYS goes with me.) I have officially arrived. πŸ˜›

I totally relate to the spider "thing". There was one in my new house the other day and it was the biggest thing I have ever seen! I can deal with those tiny money spiders but anything larger and I go crazaaay, I had to get one of my mates to go save and release it or I would have squidged the bugger haha! I have also been known to say NOMNOM a few times..don't hurt me! xD Thanks for nominating me! Will definitely do this tag later in the week!! πŸ™‚ Watch this space haha!

I love this! Reading it though, made me wonder if my "quirks" were strange too. I totally accept!
PS: I turn the radio down too when I'm looking for an address. It helps me see better or something. yeah… :/ haha

  • Best I Ever Had MUST be blared with the windows down!

Okay I died a little reading your story about the spider. Mainly because it made me think back to this june when my friend and I were cleaning out her storage shed & were CHASED by a huntsman spider – lots of screaming & was traumatic enough to require a glass of wine after we safely got inside and locked the doors (haha not that it could have opened them, but you can never be too careful!)

  • haha!!! That is hilarious, Heather! Omg, I cannot imagine being chased by one!!! You all are using actual spider names on here and there's no way I'm going to google it so I'll just take your word for it. "Huntsman" sounds terrifying.

  • I know!!!!!! πŸ™‚ Love that song!

  • I turn down the music when parking, etc. I also turn it down when looking for a street or driving in an unfamiliar place.

  • LOVVVEE THIS!! Have you read Celebitchy?? It's my go-to when people.com is stale LOL

  • Ha! YES. Hate it when people say 'nom nom'. It gives me the creeps. No idea why.

You made my day with the reminder of Tupac's Changes! Oooooold school. This white girl knows every, single, lyric!

  • Girl… The spider scare. The struggle is real. LOL! If I ever get to meet you, I'm going to say the words "nom nom" lol!!

  • I love these! We have an awful lot in common, once again – fear of spiders, addiction to people online, need to turn music down to park LOL. πŸ™‚ Funnily enough I can take other people's blood with absolutely no problem, but I cannot stand the sight of someone else taking my own. Weird, right??

Songs I must play loudly? "Poison" – Bel Biv Devoe // "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" – Cyndi Lauper // "Do I Wanna Know" – Arctic Monkeys // pretty much any song off the Jay-Z/Linkin Park combo album // and embarrassingly, "Break the Ice" – Britney Spears
(shaking my head in self chagrin) πŸ˜‰

  • I think we're the only ones (besides my husband) who cannot stand the whole "nom nom." I feel like everyone I know says it! I want it to stop, too! ha!

I am SO impressed that you have gotten over the blood fear!! I suppose if I had to do it all the time, I would just have to accept it!

  • hahaha!! Lots of people I know say 'nom nom' – you are not alone! (I'm hoping it's just a fad?!) Can't wait to read your post! πŸ™‚

  • I just can't focus or something. I don't even realize I'm turning it down, it's just automatic now if I'm parking.

  • amy

I kinda feel like we're soul mates after reading this. Made me start thinking of my own random things! I follow People on Twitter and get all the latest news from there! Hello #royalbaby!! Gavin…Best I Ever Had…ugh! Love it! And I totally turn down the music to park, like it helps me concentrate or something. And…complete side note…my parents lead a medical missions trip to Ecuador every year and are always looking for people in the medical field to go. Maybe we need to connect our parents??

  • I hate hearing people say "nom nom" or saying "It's time to nom" or "What's for noms?" It's SO annoying and I feel myself so frustrated over it. It's just stupid. There are so many other better things to say when talking about food. Those food blogs that use the word "nom" in their titles? Nope. Can't read them. Just can't.

  • Oh the nom nom thing… Yes! I can't stand that phrase. This was such a fun little post… Quirks are the best!

  • I always turn the music down when I'm looking for parking or pulling into a garage too! mostly in the garage because my windows are always down + the music is always loud…

  • This is awesome! I HATE when people say or type nom nom. I almost drop them as friends if this ever occurs! Thanks for linking up!

  • I love it and it's the only one I really read or go to. (Well, okay, sometimes I go to E! online) haha!

  • omg I just want it to stop! It grosses me out – like REALLY grosses me out. Hoping the "trend" ends soon! haha!

  • This seems to be something a lot of us share! I simply cannot concentrate when it's on – like, I have to turn it totally off/down to zero if I'm parking. Weird! πŸ™‚

  • Quirks really are funny, and it cracks me up that most of us don't even realize our own quirks but then when someone close to us points it out, it's like- ohhh. I guess I DO do that! πŸ˜‰

  • Girl you are SERIOUSLY disliking NOMS! hahah! Clearly I feel you- I don't know why it bothers me as much as it does, but it just grosses me out to no end. I think it goes along with baby talk or something… which is fine (most of the time) if you're talking to a BABY.

  • Ha! Serious. I don't know what it is but it just feels like lazy speech. I just sit there thinking to myself, "That's not even a word! It's a SOUND!" and it just irks me to no end. I'm weird about words like that sometimes. There is a whole list of words that irk me but that's for another time (really probably never b/c I worry people would deliberately use them if they knew I didn't like them).

  • haha!! I'm telling you- if only we lived closer! And YES! Let's connect them! I am so anxious to hear how things are going over there for them. They are literally in the slums with these people. My dad emailed earlier to tell me it's already life changing- how nice everyone is. This will surely not be the last trip they go on!

  • haha!! You are cracking me up. Christian and I have a list of words that we've banned from ever using in front of each other. And we never share those words with others because of the reason you just gave! πŸ˜‰

  • So see? The fear is real! There are smells too but that's a whole other subject. I'll be so happy when the "nom" trend dies. It's even on commercials! Have you noticed that? I just mute it.

  • hahah!!! Love it! Yeah I can't watch anyone draw anyone's blood and I certainly can't talk about it when I go to get it done. The last time I got it done, the girl looked really nervous. I asked her if she was alright and she's like, "I'm new here and kind of new at this" and I just stared at her and go, "Well for one, thank you for that info, Two, I will now most definitely pass out on you so how about I lay down?" I wanted to cry and I'm sure she did too, haha!

I totally forgot about Break the Ice by Brit! (So now of course I need to listen to it and blast it. Thanks for the suggestion!) πŸ˜‰

  • Oh girl, I tell you what. Nom grosses me out. The actual word grosses me out. The only thing I know that makes that noise when he eats is my parents dog. (LOL)

  • It TOTALLY gives me the creeps!! I know!

Oh yeah, girl. Tupac!! I played Changes while in the car with Christian one time and he was like, "Do you seriously know all of the words?" … I mean, of course I do. I'd like to think he was impressed but I'm not so sure. πŸ˜‰

  • I haven't read that one! (Greeeat, just one more for me to read! ha!) I usually only read People because it's the only mag that shares facts (vs just gossip)… but you know. Gossip mags all the way on girl nights. ha!

  • Oh good, so I'm not alone then!! πŸ™‚ Yes, it sounds like we definitely did not get that gene πŸ˜‰

  • I just cannot concentrate with it on!

  • Ha! I feel like I got to know you so much better in this post! It looks like the only thing we have in common is our nail polish preferences… I'm definitely the one handling the medical emergencies AND spiders amongst my friends. And while my husband does handle spiders at home, he can pass out just talking about medical things for too long. Looks like I'll be handling the splinters and vomit once we have kids! haha

  • haha!!! Hey- someone's got to do it!!

  • I wanna talk about me, I wanna talk about I, I wanna talk about number 1 oh my me my, what I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee… I like talking about you you you usually… but occasionally… I WANNA TALK ABOUT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

    Sorry. HAD TO!

  • Haha!! I go to US too, just to compare stories. I promise I have a life. πŸ™‚

  • This is AWESOME.

  • I have my moments πŸ˜‰

  • I have a friend living in Kenya right now. She's been a year and has another year to go. She loves it! Loves the people, I'm sure your parents are having incredible experiences. I've been able to travel to several places around the world with my parents, and it is so life changing. Changes your perspective completely! I can't wait to hear some of their stories.

  • hahaha. Would you hate me if I told you I had to google which song you were referring to?? (oops!!)

  • Whaaaaaat!!!!! Toby Keith is AWESOME!

  • The baby talk. THIS IS ME TOO … and my nails are almost always painted- a lot of times in ballet slippers. love all of this!

  • RIGHT?! The worst!! ha! (Love the Ballet Slippers color! It's my go to!)
