I love you to Infinity & back.
My mom and I have had this saying for as long as I can remember. Whenever we write or text each other, we shorten it to “luti+b“. It’s “our thing,” our saying for sure and each time we say it to each other, it feels like a secret handshake, a club meant just for us. While others may understand what the saying means, only she and I know the depth of all it stands for in our mother/daughter relationship. My mom is my best friend.
We are not exactly the same, my mom and me. We look a lot alike and share very similar mannerisms (if not the exact same), but we differ on various ideas, thoughts, tastes and things (though we do share a great love of running errands and bad movies on the Lifetime or Syfy channel)… but if there’s one thing (of many things) she’s taught me in my life, it’s that you don’t have to be just like someone to love them deeply, to like them even. There is a profound respect we carry for each other and, especially in the world we live in today, it’s something I am truly grateful she’s instilled in me.
Traveling to Infinity, if it were a real place, would not be an easy trek, I’d imagine. As dreamy and enticing as Infinity sounds, my mom and I would still make the trip right back to life as we know it, to each other, where love and life require hard work… where tenderness and honesty are absolutely necessary… where we can choose joy even in the midst of chaos… where we can freely and proudly be our own unique selves, where we choose to be right by each other’s side through all the ups and downs of this thing we call real life. That, to me, is true love. There’s nothing surface about it – it’s as personal as you can get. It’s a love that’s unbreakable… it’s to Infinity and right back again.
If I could suggest one thing this Christmas? Make it personal. The gift, the phone call, the family dinner, the time spent together… share your heart, share your praise. Hug tighter, speak kinder, listen longer. Make it personal.
