beautiful places us

That one time I cried when vacation was over.

April 3, 2014

Have you ever had a vacation that was SO great, you actually cried when you had to leave? I’d heard about other people doing this and totally judged them for it. Seriously? You cried because your vacation was over? You literally cried? What, are you five? Yep, I judged away. Until it happened to me.

I’ve had some pretty awesome vacations in my life – I’ve traveled to some really beautiful places, and know that I still have many other places I’m dying to visit, but there is one trip that will always remain at the top of my “favorites” list.

Maui.

Now perhaps part of why this is a favorite is because it was my honeymoon (that’ll do it!) but Hawaii truly was everything I’d hoped for and more. It felt very “old world” at times. Almost like we’d been transported back in time and it was just us and the sea. There was a certain mystery to it – I think it was in the clouds.

X and I had talked about where we might like to go for our honeymoon and decided that we’d choose a place we really wanted to visit but would probably only visit once. How and why we both decided on Hawaii, I don’t know, but I think by day 2 of our vacation we both looked at each other and said, “We’re totally coming back here.”

I am definitely a beach, sun, and strong drink kind of girl and will always opt for a relaxing/lounging/little adventure vacation over a super active one (think: skiing, mountain climbing, spending all day walking everywhere and site seeing = that’s not a vacation to me.)  Maui seemed to be the perfect mix – we lounged for most of it (and ate more than I care to elaborate on here – the food was nothing short of AMAZING) and then spent a few days hiking and “adventuring” and just driving through the rainforest and countryside.

Clearly, Maui is beautiful. But it was more than just the rainbows every day (literally every day) – even the smell of the air was beautiful. It was sweet and smelled like flowers, and our resort had hawaiian music playing 24/7, which never got old. It truly felt like paradise and I think I must have said a million times – “This place is just so dreamy.”

I’d never cried before as a vacation was coming to a close but I have to tell you, as we drove to the airport at the end of the week to go home, I felt so sad and was definitely teary-eyed. I could have stayed in Maui forever and ever and ever. (It’s okay. We’re currently planning our return trip) 🙂

So what about you? Are you a loungey/beach kind of vacationer or do you prefer super active? What was your favorite vacation? Have you ever cried when the vacation was over? (C’mon now. Don’t lie.)

  • I've been to Maui twice, and it is just the best vacation spot ever. I don't know if I've ever cried to leave vacation, but I've definitely been pretty sad. Lovely pics!

  • It looks so pretty! I've never been to Hawaii but I could definitely settle for the loungey/beachy lifestyle with a drink in my hand haha!

  • Following from The Grits Blog- beautiful pictures! I like to spend half my vacay relaxing and the other half being super active! I once cried leaving Cancun, I completely understand your pain, girl! Vacay life is so much better than real life/jobs/responsibility

  • i'm stopping over from the grits blog and so glad this is your post today because…. i'm going to maui for my honeymoon this September! I seriously can't wait and your photos have me even more excited. it's also funny because we also said how we should go to Hawaii since we'll "probably never get to go there again." Ha. I'm sure we'll love it just as much and I'll be crying on the way home too 🙂

  • I have been to Maui and can also vouch for it's beauty. I loved the fact that there were rainbows everyday. It was a paradise! So beautiful.

  • Wow, Maui looks out-of-this-world gorgeous! I like a mix of relaxation and activity on my vacations… but if I had to choose, I'm with you — relaxation all the way! I've cried over one vacation ending; it was Niagara Falls, New York. I wasn't crying about the place (it was pretty rundown), I cried because it was the end of my 1st anniversary with my boyfriend and the time was simply amazing, I didn't want it to end. Over the past 4 years we've taken many more trips, but no more tears 🙂

  • I've definitely cried when a vacation is over! There's no shame it that! And I definitely think that I would have teared up leaving your Hawaiian paradise as well! x

  • This is absolutely gorgeous! I've never been to Hawaii, but my sister just got stationed there so maybe I'll get to see it soon. 🙂 However, I totally cried coming back from my month in Edinburgh, Scotland. No shame. No shame at all.

    • You must go!! Fingers are crossed for you 🙂 Gosh, I can't imagine spending an entire month in a fabulous place- tears for sure!!

  • Sounds and looks like a beautiful trip! Hawaii is on my to-go list for the future. My husband and I are a little more of adventure vacationers. We do like our down time, we just burn easily so laying on a beach for too many hours can become a problem 😉 Though I'd risk a burn for Hawaii!

    • That's the great thing about Hawaii – if you want to be super active, you definitely can be. Especially in Kauai! I think a lot of people start in Kauai (tons of hiking, cliffs, waterfalls- it's less touristy from what I hear) and then island hop to Maui to relax 🙂 We want to do that on our return trip. Hope you guys get to go someday soon!!

  • Ahh, it's so beautiful!!
